News from the Dutch flower auction you shouldn’t miss

What have the past few months brought at Royal FloraHolland, and what does it mean for you?

As your reliable partner for plant imports, we follow the developments at Royal FloraHolland every day. This is where the journey of most flowers begins before they make their way to you – our clients. That’s why we bring you a summary of the most interesting updates – from mandatory grower certification and record volumes to technological innovations that will speed up your flower purchases.

Royal FloraHolland works on innovations that will simplify purchasing of flowers

In the first half of 2025, Royal FloraHolland has launched several innovations that will make your purchases easier and make auctions more efficient. These are the so-called multi-transaction auction that will allow up to 8 transactions to be carried out simultaneously, which reduced auction time by 15—20 minutes per day. Launched in April, this novelty brings us more flexibility and saves time when buying flowers.

We consider the second important news to be Remote Buying (KOA) software update which improves the clarity of auction hours — it is now possible to watch up to 22 auction hours instead of the original 15. What does that mean? Better control over transactions and the ability to do more of them in less time.

This spring has been a successful season for Royal FloraHolland. They achived record number of transactions. On May 5, when it took place it was 93,317 transactions.

The number one issue is and will be sustainability

The topic of sustainability dominates across industries and it is no different in the growing sector. This is also confirmed by the trend report (Trends in Floricultural Report), which shows that more than 63% of the surveyed growers work daily to improve the sustainability of their business.

Now Royal FloraHolland requires growers to be as transparent as possible about their production processes and to obtain certification. It is based on three pillars:

  • environment
  • good growing practice
  • social responsibility

Compulsory certification has been decided as early as 2024, with most suppliers expected to complete the process by January 2026. According to current information, more than 75% of growers are certified. For you, customers, this step will give you more confidence that the flowers you buy come from truly sustainable sources.

“In St. Gabriel, our customers are increasingly concerned about whether their favorite supplier meets these standards. Therefore, when deciding which of the growing we will cooperate with, we pay great attention to the ways in which they care for their flowers and whether they are on the same green wave as us,” Petr Král - St. Gabriel Marketing.

How did Royal FloraHolland handle the NATO Summit?

You may have noticed from the media that NATO summit took place in Holland in June. As a rule, this type of international event will fundamentally affect transport in the region, which can have an impact on the speed of flower delivery. And we all know that freshness is the most important thing in our industry.

We are therefore very pleased that the stock exchange managed the situation smoothly this year — 99.8% of the products were delivered without complaint and you received your orders without delay.

Despite logistical challenges and lower turnover (-16%), the number of items sold increased by 11% in June to 398.8 million. The average price fell 24.6%, due to weather conditions.
